Since last October, Kevin Gates has been locked up behind bars. Despite his hindrances, he has released two new songs in “What If” and “No Love.” On Wednesday (Sept. 6), the embattled MC gifted his devotees the visuals for “What If.”
After delivering the audio earlier this year, incarcerated Baton Rouge rapper Kevin Gates issues an official music video for his single “What If”.The Walu-directed video portrays a gruesome encounter between neighborhood residents and police. First, cops approach an African American male and soon begin attacking him. Witnesses catch wind of the skirmish and try to put a stop to it. On the flip-side, a single mother does her best to provide for her children, who appear famished after discovering they have no food in the fridge.
Last year, Kevin Gates was sentenced to 180 days in prison after kicking a fan in the chest at a show in 2015. With several storylines woven into “What If,” Gates’ absence doesn’t drag the video down at all. Towards the end of the video, a letter written by Gates to his fans pops up.
“Dear loyal fans,
Disallow yourselves to be troubled in my time of absence. All of the great ones who came before and will come after me: Have had to go through this. By this I am speaking in reference to hardship. A great person is measured by all of the great test they can undergo and still remain to to who they are. What that being said, ‘I’m him.’ I love you all. In closing I remain the same. Forever, Kevin Gates.”
Last year, Gates was sentenced to 180 days in prison after being found guilty of battery after kicking a fan in the chest during a 2015 concert. The day he was supposed to be released, he was sent back into prison for a weapons charge, which further extended his sentence by 30 months.
